I asked my cousins to come up with 5 words that pops into their mind when they think of Oma!

It’s funny how in answering this simple questions, many searched and recounted the memories they had with Oma. Despite the various nostalgia and age gap, many of us think of one word when we think of Oma. The word is HOME.

Did I mention that my Oma, mothered nine children?

Nine wickedly disobedient children that would put Dennis the Menace to shame.
If you don’t believe this claim here are some snippets to illustrate:

You know, you’re a scoundrel when you are expelled from school! My uncle was expelled from school, so many times that there was only ONE…UNO…EYNS, school left, at the time, that he hasn’t attended.

Teachers sobbing are one of the many difficulties my Oma had to face during parent-teacher meetings. Other difficulties include confrontations by other parents for having bullies as children. That was always a difficult one! As a mother you are most probably always biased towards your demonic “angelic” children.

There are many other epic stories, but I will do them justice next time. It’s too astounding to be compressed within this post.

Despite their many antics, at the end the day the siblings would gather at the dining table. It is through their stomach my Oma control them. A favorite dish cooked especially for one of them does not only reward good behavior, but also humble those bad behaviors. You wouldn’t hurt those who takes care of you and cooks your favorite meal, now would you?

2. Tante Hedy                  : Ayam Bumbu Rujak, Tahu Petis Sambal Hijau
3. Tante Betty                  : Ayam Kodok, Huzarensla (Dutch Meat and Potato Salad)
4. Tante Sally                   : Salem Sla, Klaper Taart, Fruit Cocktail
5. My father: Freddy    : Ayam Panggang Ngohiong Sambal Jahe
6. Oom Willy                    : Soto Betawi
7. Tante Corry                 : Macaroni, Sambal Tauco Cabai Hijau
8. Oom Tony                    : Merah Delima, Kroket
   (Courtesy of his daughter, as Oom Tony doesn’t seem to remember his favorite food. “Gampang Dah! Inget-inget dulu” he said!)
9. Oom Benny                  : TBA
   (Haven’t had the chance to ask him yet! Watch out for updates!)

I will add the recipes for these dishes as soon as I locate them! And maybe some name translation (once I figure out what they are really called). Ayam Kodok’s literal translation is Chicken Frog? Frog Chicken? That does not sound too appetizing!

Well technically, I am still guessing.

I am lactose intolerant, that’s for sure. Dairy Allergies and Lactose Intolerance are different right?

But lately almost every time I had cheese, my face would itch, turned red and its texture rough, like sand paper.

Hopefully, this allergy is only towards certain types of cheese.

*sigh*

Why is this happening to me?

*sobbing while touching my sand paper textured face*

My encounters with cheese within these couple of months:

1. I had Burger King Whopper Jr. with Cheese.

Deviation: Normally I had them without.
Allergic Reaction: YES, my face blushed and itches.
Denial: It was a hot day in Jakarta

2. Cheese Pizza and Rucola Salad with Shaved Parmesan

Deviation: I was in Europe
Allergic Reaction: YES, my face blushed, itches, and rough facial skin texture
Denial: The weather was very dry and caused my skin to itch.

3. Cheese Fondue ala Oom Fritz

Deviation: Gruyere Cheese Fondue served with White Wine
Allergic Reaction: Surprisingly NO
Denial: A confirmation that I have NO allergic reaction to Cheese

4. Sweet Pea’s Birthday Cake, lined with thick Cheese slices and shaved cheese garnish in both Pandan and Original

Deviation: I had Nasi Bakar with fish for lunch and Prawn for dinner (I never had allergic reactions to any previously)
Allergic Reaction: YES, I am still feeling the impact right now .
Denial: I can’t deny it, most probably I do have an allergic reaction to CHEESE.

Conclusion:

I can have cheese but it has to be accompanied with WINE!
It’s the only time I didn’t have an allergic reaction.

Food for Thoughts:

I am okay with cheese. I like it, but not a die hard fan. On the other hand, my little cousin LOVES cheese. She eats cheese everyday, if possible on every meal. Scrambled eggs with cheese for breakfast, cheese sandwich for lunch, pisang goreng with cheese for snacks, and cheesy pizza for dinner. How do you become obsessed with food? Is it how you were brought up? or what food is always available around the house? or what other explanation?

Still smilling at 90!

Grandmother Cookbook. The entry titled a Tribute to Oma, really inspired me to start the project I have been postponing for too long.

I am trying to collect stories  and memories about my grandmother, my oma, especially relating to her cooking, food and recipes. So dear cousins, please help me complete this.

So here goes, the first story in this project.

My Grandmother’s Sous Chef

I remember when I was under the care of my Oma. Both of my parent work, so everyday after school I would be sent to my aunt’s house, where my Oma resides. The afternoon usually started with lunch. My Oma, my aunt, my cousins and I would gather together at the dining table, each recollecting events and incidents of the day. Mind you, my stories are usually the most bland, as I was the youngest. My cousins’ would retell who bullied who, who kissed who, the politics of high school, while I stared in amazement listening to their tales.

As the lunch party dissolved, my aunts returned to her gardening and my older cousins continued their gossips, I find myself faced with a dreadful activity, an afternoon siesta. I looked at my older cousins in envy, as nap time is exclusively for the young ones. All attempts failed miserably to avoid it, until one day I came across my Oma on the porch preparing a dish. Finally, a ticket out of Siesta-dom!

Helping my Oma cook became a routine and I was really involved in the preparation process. Despite my denied entry to the kitchen (reason for this requires a separate entry), I was experienced enough as a Sous-Chef to prepare the ingredients of Sarang Burung (birds’ nest), roll the Ronde (red bean dumpling with ginger water), shape and bread the Dutch Kroket (look for the recipe here!), and weave the Ketupat (Indonesian rice cakes). Thinking back, this is a stark contrast to my current reluctance to enter the kitchen.

As a highly skilled helper, I was entrusted with more responsibility come Chinese New Year. With nine children and their immediate family, small is not really the exact way to describe our gathering. Thus my skills and experiences are employed, this time not only for the dish preparations. I was promoted to be part of the actual cooking and be allowed to enter her domain, the kitchen.

The party was a success! The food ravished and the tummies filled.  Now it is the time the children have been waiting for, the handing out of Hong Baos or red packages filled with money. My cousins and I lined up, saying our greetings with terrible accents “Gong Xi Fat Cai,” and received our shares. While my Oma gave one to me, she said ‘Don’t forget to give me a kiss me before you go home tonight!’ and I nodded.

As bid my adieu and kissed my Oma goodnight, she gave me another Hong Bao and told me to keep it a secret. I followed my parent into the car, and as the engine revved, I rolled down the window. Called my cousins, who are still gossiping instead of bidding their goodbyes, and flaunted the hong bao given by my Oma, while quickly drawing the identical one from my pocket, the special hong bao just for me.

This gesture prompted my cousins, to quickly reach their pockets and count their red packages. The car drove, and a sigh of relieve was exhaled by my cousins. I closed the window and giggled at the back seat of the car, self-indulgingly thinking that I am my Oma’s favorite grandchild.

Kemarin lagi browse-browse wordpress ternyata ada juga yang begitu. Makan Won Ton Soup dan memori bersama sang papa di Medan. Memang kalau melihat fotonya sih aku juga bisa meringis, apa lagi jam-jam lapar begini. Diluar hujan, dingin-dingin sedapnya menyeruput kuah dan won ton. Slurppp..

Sekarang giliran aku deh yang cerita.

Bolu Kukus Mowgli

“Mau mamam Baloo, Mami!!”

Begitulah teriakanku sambil mendendangkan lagu dan joget-joget ala Baloo dan Mowgli dari Jungle Book.

Baloo adalah karakter favoriteku dari film Jungle Book. Rasanya waktu cepat sekali berlalu, baru kemarin rasanya ikut-ikutan nyanyi “bare necessities, the simple bare necessities..” bersama Baloo dan Mowgli, sekarang tiba-tiba sudah segede bagong.

Begitulah, tidak tahu saking nge-fansnya sama si Baloo atau memang bicaranya masih tidak becus, bolu kukus itu aku panggil Baloo haha

What a simple time it was!!

Pikiranku hanya dipenuhi oleh teman-teman animasiku, Mowgli dan Baloo, Tom dan Jerry, Doraemon dan Nobita.

*sigh* aku cuma berharap suatu saat nanti aku bisa memberikan perlindungan dan kasih sayang seperti yang orang tuaku berikan.

Kalau ini cerita bagaimana Lebah Koening mulai berjalan. Baca saja cerita dibawah ini untuk lebih lengkapnya yah. Ini bukan rekayasa lho, kejadian nyata Tante dan sepupuku.

Kenapa dinamakan Lidah “Anak” Kucing?

Berikut aku ceritakan sedikit yah asal-usul nama tersebut.

Nah LebahKoening ini bermula dari aktifitas seorang ibu dan anaknya yang sedang mengobrak-abrik resep peninggalan sang nenek.

Sang anak yang berinisiasi sendiri membuat cetakan lidah kucingnya dalam ukuran yang mini-mini. Saat melihat sang ibu terperanjat “Lho kok kecil-kecil sekali Lidah Kucingnya!”

Yang dijawab oleh anaknya “Iya donk Ma, kan biar imut-imut kayak aku. Nanti adonan Mama saja yang ukuran Lidah Kucing dewasa”

Alhasil saat kue tersebut sudah matang, yang laris habis duluan adalah si Lidah Anak Kucing, karena ukurannya yang mini bikin orang penasaran.

Oh yah, selain ukurannya yang mini, rasa Lidah Anak Kucing ini juga “nagih” lho. Tidak bisa deh makan hanya satu keping saja!!

Bosen kan makan lidahnya kucing dewasa!

Mau sharing-sharing foto aja hasil jualan Parcel Lebaran ini.

Total Toko Kue Lebah Koening menjual 16 Parcel. Lumayan juga sih! Target sih menjual 20, tapi ternyata tidak mudah juga menjualnya.

Ada 3 type Parcel:

1. Parcel Mini dengan 5 kue kering, 2 meringue mini dan 2 kaleng kerupuk mini berisikan Momogi.
2. Parcel Lebah dengan 2 kue kering, 2 kaleng kerupuk dengan jajanan jaman dulu dan berbagai item lainnya.
3. Parcel Madu hampir sama dengan Parcel Lebah dengan tambahan item dan panci (disediakan oleh yang membeli)

Memang berbeda jauh sih dengan sketch ide-nya.

Tapi lumayan senang juga, customer happy dengan parcelnya. Kaleng kerupuknya juga bisa dipakai kembali.

Lebah Koening sih berpikiran agar parcel edisi pertama ini bertemakan Ja-Doel alias jaman doeloe. Prototypenya sih sebetulnya belum jadi, maklum masih nunggu kiriman packagingnya (kaleng kerupuk mini!!). Tapi kira-kira seperti sketch di samping ini sih.

Harganya sih maunya berkisar dari Rp. 250,000-350,000.- tergantung isi. Tidak kemahalan kan yah?
Memang sih parcelnya bisa dibilang mini, dibandingkan dengan yang dijual di supermarket. Tetapi isinya sih dijamin jauh lebih ok! Freshly baked cookies dan barang-barang pilihan lainnya (belum ditampilkan di sketch!)
